The Audi R8 GRAND-AM bears a strong resemblance to the GT3 version, which is raced around the rest of the world. However, the requirements and the regulations in the GRAND-AM series differ significantly from other series’.
This is visible at first glance: to reduce costs, the GRAND-AM series permits considerably less aerodynamic freedom than the GT3 regulations. The R8 GRAND-AM must therefore manage with between 70 per cent less downforce than the R8 LMS ultra.
For the 2013 season, Audi has regained a small amount of aerodynamically generated downforce: small vanes on the front (flics), ventilation of the front wheel arches through mesh above the front wheels and a new rear wing position reduce the losses compared to the GT3 model.
An intake air restrictor influences the power and torque of the proven 5.2-liter V10 power unit.
