The opening race of the new DTM season did not go as desired for Audi. Although Timo Scheider took the lead from the start, during a safety car phase on the sixth lap his team called him into the pits too late to change tyres. Scheider dropped down to the tail of the field. A stirring comeback drive saw him take sixth place at the flag. In a generally turbulent race, Mike Rockenfeller (eighth) was the only other Audi driver to score points in addition to Scheider.

Audi takes pole position for the first race of the DTM season at Hockenheim. In qualifying, the two-time champion Timo Scheider recorded the fastest lap in the decisive fourth section of qualifying. Unsettled weather turned qualifying into a tyre lottery. “You had to make the right decisions today, and we did this”, said a delighted Scheider about his eleventh best time overall in qualifying for the DTM.
Hockenheim is where the DTM is at home. The season opener and finale of the DTM have been held at the traditional Grand Prix track for years. The excitement is almost physically noticeable in the Motodrom, especially during the first DTM weekend of the year when the drivers and fans eagerly await qualifying. After all the true level of performance is only revealed at this time before every season.
